I have one word for you. Keywords. 

Keywords are what we put into a search engine when we are looking for information, a service or a product and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of finding and using keywords within your site.

Say, for instance, you are a web designer who wants to be found locally. Just imagine that.

Adding 'freelance web designer' somewhere in my text will get me found but I'll be a small fish in a big international pond. 'Freelance web designer UK' might get me listed higher up the SERP (Search Engine Results Page - the page Google gives you with answers). 'Freelance web designer Devon' is more specific to my area, although I'll also lose out on the volume of searches, ie, less people will be searching for it.

As Google (and Bing, etc) have improved their Artificial Intelligence that scan web pages, so AI has got better at recognising what a website is about. If you remember the first days of websites you would quite often find pages with:

It doesn't read well and it's not enjoyable but it would have got you far up the results page on a Google. Nowadays, AI is trained to spot this kind of thing and mark it as spammy. You would more likely be penalised and sent to the back of the line than appear at the top of the search results.

These days, AI can spot the gist of a page, so if you are consistent with keyword research and write decent, readable copy that uses a variety of keywords then you are more likely to do well in local searches. There's lots of tools available to do the research online if you want to go that way, but I also offer to do that research for you, free if you also ask me to design your website or write regular copy but also available at a small price if you want to do your own SEO.

It's a well-worn idea that once a website is built the process ends. If all you want is a static calling card then this may be enough, but for a website to really start working for you regular refreshes are better. Put yourself in the customer's shoes. You log onto your website and see the last update was in 2012. Does it tell them that you are current? Active? Still in business? Do you think they are the local expert in your target market?

 

Regular, engaging copy tells your story, labels you as current and sets you apart from others in your market. What's more, when you want to rank first on Google, regular updates are vital and can be achieved through blogging. It's all about keeping keywords current and the SEO focused.

For small businesses on a tight budget I run regular workshops, both online and as a freelance web designer in North Devon. You can book these courses on Eventbrite or choose something more unique to you with a one-to-one session at an hourly rate. 

The courses are a how-to walk-through website build, usually on the WiX platform as it's a nice approachable website builder even for technophobes. Courses cover design, build, tips on keyword searching, optimising text and graphics for SEO, adding products, blogging, and a Q&A session for anything else you'd like to know. 

It can be a great, affordable way to get yourself online.
